RACT Victoria Association visit to Army School of Transport Puckapunyal

On Friday 11 April 8 members of the Association together with five family members travelled to ‘Pucka’ hosted by Recruit Training Wing Army School of Transport (AST). The visit arranged by Corps Commandant COL Paul Ryan was designed to give past Corps members a chance to revive memories of their past service and review the range Rheinmetall MAN Military logistic vehicles, used for driving training at the School.

Those of us with a current driver’s license even got to drive one, which was an unforgettable experience compared to trucks such as the Mark 3 and 5 Internationals, Unimog and Macks trucks of the past. The day started with lunch in the OR’s Mess, a briefing then driving experience around the driver training circuit. This was followed by plenty of time to chat with the graduates of the just completed Initial Equipment Training course (IET) at the William Dunston Club. After they received their graduation certificate there was plenty of time for us ‘oldies’ to mingle, learn about the recruits’ experiences and tell a few tales of yesteryear.

Overall, it was an excellent day and very rewarding to be so warmly welcomed at AST and to see the enthusiasm on the faces of the young soldiers as they embark on their career initially as drivers in the Army.
